Ferry Possibilities

At the moment, there is very little in the way of ferries in Hawai'i.  I've listed current ferries together, as well as other information about the lack of ferries in the state and the possibilities of gaining them in the future.

01/13/2004 - News! The Hawaiian Super Ferry is closer to reality - an order has been placed for two large catamarans that can hold as many as 900 people and 280 cars each, expected for delivery sometime between 2006 and 2008.  Article - Ferry venture accelerates

Current Ferries

• Maui activities - Expeditions Lanai ferry - info on passage from Mau'i to Lana'i.
• Molokai - Maui Ferry Molokai Princess - they offer packages and just day-trips.
• Molokai US Hawaii - ferry schedule for the above ferry.

General Information

• $241 MILLION APPROVED FOR HAWAII TRANSPORTATION INITIATIVES - from Senator Daniel K. Inouye's website.  There is brief mention of about $15 million for ferry development in the 2004 budget.
• Air merger could spur ferry service - an older newspaper article (December 27, 2001), but perhaps of interest.
• Ferry terminal set to open on O'ahu - The Honolulu Advertiser - "A new $5 million ferry terminal will open next month [July 2003] in Honolulu Harbor, but don't plan any trips yet. Transportation officials say the start of a ferry service in the state is still years away."
• Hawaii.com | Water Transportation - information on the lack of interisland water transportation, plus a little bit of info on the ferries that do exist.
• Hawaii Highways -- FAQs page 5 - see question 5.5 for an interesting discussion of ferries and the lack there of.  Apparently there were some more regular ones in the 70's....
